Five tips for getting work experience in TV University of Manchester Careers Blog There are no two ways about it â€" getting into the media is difficult. As somebody who’s been trying to get into TV for a while now, it can feel almost impossible to get that first break. So when work experience opportunities pop up â€" especially with the really big names out there â€" hundreds of eager students and graduates flood the inbox of a poor unsuspecting work experience manager, vying to get their foot in the door. Last month, I undertook a two-week work experience placement at the BBC in MediaCityUK, working on the production team for an upcoming Christmas TV show (let’s face it; there are definitely worse ways to spend two weeks!). I spent a week working in the office alongside the Production Management Assistant, getting an overview on how the producers make everything happen from start to finish, from coming up with the initial Filming from a Manchester rooftop, trying to ignore the biting November chill idea, to getting in touch with contributors, to booking transport for the show’s presenters, to handling the raw footage from the camera teams. The second week, I was out working as a runner with all of the camera teams, assisting at shoots on various locations around Manchester. While on work experience, the BBC really treat you as an important part of the team â€" I was given real, practical tasks, handling a lot of responsibilities, and I didn’t even make a single cup of tea. Trust me, I tried, you have to make a good impression and all that… From this placement, I’ve learnt so much about the industry and the kinds of jobs involved, gained some fantastic practical skills of how to co-operate on shoots and acquired some knowledge of loads of different roles along the way. If you’re really passionate about getting into TV, or generally working in the media, I can’t recommend it enough. It is, of course, a difficult industry to get into and to get real-world experience in, so here are my five tips for getting experience while at university. Perseverance is key You’ll have to get used to rejection. Roles are competitive, and you’ll have to learn to bounce back, to figure out how you could improve (whether it’s your skills, your experience or your application), and to keep at it. It was the fourth time I had applied for this work experience placement, having previously been knocked back. This time round I made sure I’d gained a bit more experience elsewhere, really thought about how to articulate my experiences and enthusiasm for the industry, and made sure I put in a great application, too. Don’t wait for the opportunities to come to you The kinds of opportunities you’ll come across online will usually be those with the big names in the industry, such as the BBC or Channel 4, and this isnt really representative of how the industry works. Do some research to find out about some smaller independent companies they may not have work experience schemes on their website, but they will usually welcome an email asking about the chance to come in and shadow for a day or two. It’s a really great way to make connections in the industry, and in a smaller company you may even have a bit more room to show off your skills. A good place to start is TV Watercooler, who list a variety of companies offering work experience, although make sure to look elsewhere, too. Also, while at university, take the initiative to create your own experience. Get involved with student media, such as the Mancunion or Fuse TV and Fuse FM it’s where you can make your first steps into media, meet like-minded people, and also make all your mistakes! Use social media It turns out that we now live in an age where Facebook has become the place to find work, not just procrastinate from it. Pages such as The Unit List  and People looking for TV work: Runners  are good places to search for entry-level work, and to get tips on your CV. Join the Media Club The Careers Service’s Media Club meets regularly for guest presentations and networking events with professionals and recent graduates working in TV, film, radio, broadcasting, journalism and more. Join the club on Facebook. Watch some TV! This is definitely the easiest step, but arguably the most important! If you want to work in the media, you have to be passionate about the content and be able to show it. Watch shows that you like, and that you don’t think about what makes a good story, or how you could make it better. Listen to the radio on the way into uni. Come up with your own show ideas who knows, hopefully you’ll be able to make them a reality soon! Student Loan Forgiveness Basics Student Loan Forgiveness Programs Believe it or not, there are ways to get large portions of student loan debt completely forgiven. They are legitimately allowed to simply dissolve as though they were paid off. Of course, there is no magic wand, there are qualifications that must be met, it takes some time and some work, but student loan forgiveness programs do exist, and they can help get college grads out of debt well before the loans would have been naturally paid off. Student loan forgiveness is a process by which student loans are forgiven, wiped clean off the slate with no negative ramifications whatsoever, in exchange for certain types of service for certain people that qualify or meet certain specifications. As of now, student loan forgiveness programs only exist for federal student loans, but still, that can equate to a substantial amount of money and years of payments that are simply washed away. Essentially there are two types of student loan forgiveness programs, a federal program and state programs. Both types as mentioned only forgive federal loans, but if all qualifications are met, then the entire balance of the loan is forgiven, and both types of programs can be used at the same time so long as qualifications are met and the applicant is accepted. They take time and it is not guaranteed, but it can certainly help anyone burdened by student debt. Here are quick overviews if the two types of student loan forgiveness programs. Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program: This is the federal program that was started by President Obama. Essentially the entire amount of the loan will be forgiven so long as a person works in a public service occupation that is approved for this student loan forgiveness program. Also, the applicant must make 10 years of on time payment on the qualified student loan while working at that public servant job to meet the specifications. There are certain debt to income ratios that must be met as well as some other stipulations, but those are the basic requirements for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Again not all applicants are accepted so if interested and this type of student loan forgiveness program can help, it is best to get the application process started as soon as possible. Loan Repayment Assistance Program: These are the state run programs. These do vary based on your specific state, but they do not have as strong of requirements generally as the federal program. This student loan forgiveness program generally only requires a short term membership in a state run organization or a short term public service commitment of an approved form through the state. This program can be used in conjunction with the federal program in the case of multiple loans or while working on meeting requirements for the federal student loan forgiveness program. In both cases, student loan forgiveness can greatly help ease the impact and burden of long term debt associated with student loans, and can greatly improve a family’s finances.

Happiness at work in Bulgaria - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This weekend I was in Sofia, Bulgaria to speak at an event about happiness at work arranged by the Bulgarian foundation Credo Bonum. The event had two speakers, Nic Marks and myself, and we kicked ass if I do say so myself. Nic is a researcher with a long background in happiness research and gave an excellent overview of how to define and measure happiness at work. I could then offer some specific ideas of how to create happy workplaces. The event was a massive hit and turnout was huge with a large group of people having to stand in the back. I also did a number of TV interviews as well as a joint appearance with Nic on the late night show Night Birds which has to stand as the most fun Ive ever had on TV. We were on for 45 minutes and not only was there a live band to play happy music, we also got to do live improv comedy with two actors. The show will air at some later date. I also did a an interview for a magazine you can read it here. A massive thank you to Credo Bonum for giving me this opportunity to speak in Bulgaria, to Simeon and Nikolet for being such great hosts and to everyone who came to the event. Looks like Im dancing on YouTube. Its all #JobHuntChats fault! 2 Flares 2 Flares When I told the #JobHuntChat community that Id dance on YouTube if we reached 300 participants in a single chat, I didnt think it would happen just two weeks after making that statement.  I mean, I knew it would happen.  I knew how amazing the #JobHuntChat community is.  They are second to none, and connect quicker than a one player game of connect four, but this happened just way too fast! My ridiculous claim was tweeted roughly two weeks ago.  The first chat after those tweets had 180 participants.  Then the week after, #JobHuntChat saw 200 folks join in.  Then this passed Monday night, #JobHuntChat had 305 chatters, and I was swallowing my words like daggers. Shit. Well, Im a man of my words, and #JobHuntChat deserves this.  The community is like no other that Ive seen on Twitter.  Chat members stick around after #JobHuntChat ends for what seems like an hour.  Some community members hop on the phone when the online chat ends, so that they can continue to connect and learn from each other.  Its amazing to see, and well, if my making a fool of myself on YouTube is what they want, then that is what they get.
